The term public relations has been used prominently since the first half of the twentieth century. Generally defined as providing and managing an effective method of communication between a company and its consumers, public relations encompasses a massive amount of different aspects and can be seen in practice, in one form or another, with all companies and organisations around the world today.
Originally, public relations was a term that enveloped all industries and to carry out public relations for a football team was considered to be the same, at least in principle, as carrying out public relations for a retail outlet.
As progression took course, the phrase became an umbrella term for many break-off versions of public relations, which were much more specific to the industry in which it was being carried out. For example, consumer PR had different factors to media PR, which in turn varied with retail PR and health and beauty PR.
Out of all of these smaller terms, education PR is one that is considered to be still relatively new, with many companies only beginning to offer it as an individual service within the last five years.
In basic terms, education PR is the promotion of a certain service, product or organisation that is related to the education sector, generally to a substantial degree.
Whilst public relations in general requires a lot skill and experience in the sector, with past experience being in the media industry being of a huge advantage, education PR can require a lot more in-depth knowledge, especially if a specific product is to be launched or managed.
Due to the need for a large amount of industry relevant knowledge, not a vast quantity of companies offer education PR as a completely separate service and generally include it under the large public relations term. Whilst this is suitable for some clients, as an experienced company will already have links with a range of media outlets in place, such as television channels, exact programs and newspaper publications, the more specific the client is within the education industry, the more expert knowledge they require from the company.
If a public relations company is being looked for to work with a company in the education sector, then there are certain points that need to be considered and questions that need to be asked before any company or professional is hired. For example, one of the primary points that needs to be considered is the companys overall reputation and knowledge. It is a good indication that a company can be hired if their reputation precedes them and their knowledge of public relations in general is of a high standard.
In addition, more in-depth questions related to the education sector should be asked, as well as appropriate questions in relation to the requirements and criteria that are to be set by the client. If these can be answered to an acceptable level for the client, then it is generally seen that the public relations company is one with plentiful experience, extensive knowledge and overall high quality standards and consideration should be given to hiring them. |
