We live in a fast-paced world, where technology breakthroughs occur by the minute. Somehow, we have been conditioned to think that we must have every state-of-the-art technology item to improve our quality of life. However, some of these products represent a risk to our lives.

That is the case of the GPS, global positioning system, that as innocent as it may seem, it is a doorway to scams and crimes. Purchasing and using these products is not as easy as it may seem. One has to be extra careful and take a lot of precautions to avoid being a victim.

Let us start by the scams. Anybody can be a victim of GPS scams. A well-known technology brand, that markets GPS devices, has recently launched a very interesting and tempting offer. They claim that with the purchase of a GPS device there is a one hundred dollars rebate.

In order for them to grant you this rebate, you need to send them certain documentation and paperwork. Once you do, the rebate is processed. However, a few weeks after this, you will receive a letter from this company stating that they are not able to honor the rebate due to lack of documentation.

Of course they do not give you the details of what kind of paperwork is missing, and if you try to get in touch with them you will not receive any response. Some other people feel scammed because the services provided by GPS companies are misleading.

You buy the device to aid you with long trips. You trust the device to suggest you the best route and to help you throughout the whole trip. However, a lot of companies do not provide off-line maps, which may get you in serious trouble. If your trip is long and you lose signal, you may end up in the middle of nowhere, with no directions, and completely lost.

So if the whole point of having a GPS is to avoid getting lost, and you still get lost, why would anybody purchase one of these devices? In addition, you will find that many companies will try to sell you a plethora of accessories that are completely unnecessary. Still the salesperson will convince you that you must have them if you want your GPS to function correctly.

The worst con of a GPS device is that it may turn you into a victim of identity theft. GPS devices are located in our cars' dashboard. If your car is stolen so is your GPS and all the information it contains, for example your home address.

The criminals will go to your home and burglarize it. In addition, with the name and address of the owner of the car, a criminal can apply for credit cards or loans on behalf of the victim.

There is no justification to exposing yourself like this. However if you still feel that you may need a GPS device, do a thorough research before purchasing it, and always disconnect it from your car's dashboard before parking it. Be extra careful to avoid becoming a victim.
